Trip to Amsterdam
Posted: May 31, 2010 Filed under: Travel 1 Comment »Amsterdam is two things: weed and hookers.
Thats why people come to Amsterdam right? Not the Van Gogh museum. Not Anne Frank’s house. Not the cute 17th century houses with dangerously steep steps. Not the gross greenish brown canals because drunk people either use them as a urinal or throw bikes into the canals as a game. Not even the sex museum because, borrowing the words of a coffeeshop owner, “Why go see the museum when you can just do it?”
So that’s what my experience in Amsterdam was like. I did enjoy the tour of the city, the torture museum, the Van Gogh museum, and the Heineken brewery, just to name a few. (Oh, the Van Gogh museum was amazing even though the admission was 14 euros, a bit steep for the size of the exhibition. I remember studying him when I was in 5th grade and marveling at his style and the subjects he depicted, and seeing the real paintings just took me way back. The potato eaters, the shoes, the cherry blossoms, his self-portraits. One word. Genius.)
But if you asked me what I did in Amsterdam, I would probably tell you about how weed is illegal but tolerated in Amsterdam, which means you can go to coffeeshops, look at the menu, and order different types of marijuana grown in different parts of the world according to your taste. Or tell you about how i lost my live-sex-show virginity.
It’s a city where tourists go wild and the Dutch make money. I left Amsterdam Saturday morning sleep deprived and broke, but with memories, both good and bad, and even dirty ones too.
Put my Republic of Korea passport together with Easyjet and you get a story. A sad story.
Posted: May 31, 2010 Filed under: Personal, Racism, Travel 1 Comment »Oh Amsterdam, with its illegal, but tolerated coffeeshops (where they sell marijuana), the antique buildings and the canals, and its red light district where prostitutes come in all sizes and shapes…and colors…and genders.
It was going to be an unforgettable four-day adventure with Katie, Alissa and Rafael.
But I almost didn’t make it. (Those of you know know me well are probably thinking she overslept and missed the plane. But thanks to my friends, I got to the airport two hours before departure.) So why was it?
Well, this is why.
We were flying out of London Gatwick, and because we were flying on Easyjet, we didn’t need to get our passports checked until we got to the gate. There were two lines forming at the gate, where Rafael and Katie got in one line and Alissa and I stood in the other one. The Easyjet flight attendants were scanning the boarding passes and checking the passports for visas if relevant.
Then came my turn. The blonde Easyjet lady flipped through my passport then asked, “Where is your visa?”
I explained I didn’t need a visa for Netherlands because I could travel within the EU without one.
“No, you need a visa.”
“I’m pretty sure I don’t.”
“Okay. I’ll call the manager.”
After a short phone call, she came back. “Republic of Korea. You need a visa.”
This was ridiculous, I thought. Was Netherlands not part of the EU? No, that couldn’t be the case. They used the euros.
“I traveled to Spain, France, and everywhere else without visas, and it was fine-“
She wasn’t listening. She was too busy writing “VISA REQUIRED” on my boarding pass.
Alissa tried to help by explaining that we were students studying in the UK. Her response? “Oh, you’re US citizen. You’re fine.”
So Alissa, Katie and Rafael went in. I was directed to the side of the desk, where I waited until everyone was let in. I approached the other lady who had handled Rafael’s and Katie’s passports.
“Can you double check for me if I can go to Amsterdam without a visa?”
“Okay,” she replied, and turned to the guy next to her to go tell the pilot that everyone had boarded and that the plane was ready for departure.
Was she kidding me? It was even before she checked if I could get on or not, and she had basically told the plane to leave without me. “Wait, can you call first?”
“Madame, please wait. I will.”
And after the guy left, she did call. ONLY TO FIND OUT THERE WAS NO REASON FOR HER TO DETAIN ME. “Republic of Korea. Is that South Korea?” She asked me to make sure. I gave her the of-course-it-is-you-bitch look with a nod.
“I’m so sorry. I apologize for the confusion. You should go run to catch the flight.” I did eventually make it, but what I felt was nothing close to gratitude or relief. Anger was more like it. It wasn’t just annoyance or irritation at her attitude though. I wasn’t just angry at the lady for being ignorant about whether Republic of Korea meant South or North. But my anger had its roots in deep frustration—what Koreans would call ‘han’ (한 or 恨, a term used to refer to lament and resentment against injustice and oppression). It’s a “feeling of unresolved resentment against injustices suffered, a sense of helplessness because of the overwhelming odds against one, a feeling of acute pain in one’s guts and bowels, making the whole body writhe and squirm, and an obstinate urge to take revenge and to right the wrong—all these combined” according to some Korean expert.
It wasn’t the first time the passport control confused my green “Republic of Korea” passport for a North Korean one. But it was the first time I felt discriminated against because of the color of my passport. The first time I felt ashamed to be different from everyone else, and the first time I hated the flight attendants for making me feel ashamed. The way she assumed I wouldn’t be able to board made me feel helpless. Powerless. A sore thumb sticking out.
What Rafael said after I got on the plane made me even more angry. “Yeah, she was racist, but hey, you just have to expect it.”
I refused to agree with him because I refuse to accept that is how I am supposed to be treated and that is how I will be treated because of my passport, because of the color of my skin. I won’t accept the invitation to expect the worst. That is too pessimistic for me, and I believe the world can be a better place.
But maybe he is right. Isn’t that the reality of the world we live in? Should we just expect the worst? Because racism does exist. Right here. Right now.
got mah nails diiiiiddddd

So I’m not really that lazy, I’ve just have too much to write about while finalizing stuffff and enjoying summer 2010 of course.
Summer 2010 has been here for awhile and I’ve already had an awesome start!! Said some bittersweet farewells to peopleesss who graduated, made some new friends, went to new places and had some new adventures. Packing up to leave, partying night after night on different college campuses, chilling with friends drinking, tacobell, meltdowns from blanchard cafe (I eat birds and fishes now), and a trip to CT for a bonfire before I head for my 3 months in NYC. THIS IS MY FIRST SUMMER IN NYC <3. And it just might be a fab one.
Yes, the bonfire at which Brian put on a gorilla suit late into the night.. haha I hope he doesn’t mind me posting his hot suit. but he shouldnt cuz I’m his bffl <3 lol
I was sitting in Bryant Park yesterday, in the dreadful heat, watching people walk by (lots of good looking European tourists FYI) and its hard to imagine that about a year ago… I was preparing to leave for my 2 month editing internship in Vietnam. ALOT has changed since then which brings me to what I’ll be upto for the summer. My internship for the summer has been officially confirmed annd imma be an event planner for the Asian American International Film Festival which is to be held mid July (I’ll be posting about work so followww to be updated with awesome parties and screeenings, etc). Unfortunately its not a paid internship but I am REALLY excited to check out venues and explore NYC nightlife outside of the Asian nightscene I am more familiar with
to enrich my summer experience. In addition to event planning, I have an interview at 6pm today for a promoter position at this up and coming nightlife group. They’ve hosted parties for fashion week and I think Kanye’s bday if I’m not misinformed xD. My first weekend back in the city, my cousin and I went to this club/lounge called Crimson:
I really wouldnt mind the promoter job, so wish me luck!! and pray that I get paid well? lol
I plan on buying an old analog camera.. probs an olympus 35mm lens so I’ll be doing up street photography so something else to look forward to
It feels great to be in the city even though I hide away in Brooklyn and in total relevance, Sex and the City 2 in the agenda sooon!
<3
btw have u seen this outrageous shiz? I was looking for this awesome, sick, amazing song I heard on the radio with Lis when I was visiting her in Westchester and stumbled on this madness instead… :
can’t wait to see you sooooon too aileenie <3 <3
Bittersweet.

SO EVERYONE IS A LAZY BUTTHOLE EXCEPT ME.
AND, DESPITE ME BEING BUSY AND LEAVING LONDON IN SIX DAYS, I am going to post a blog. Yes, I know I’m fabulous. Here we go.
First, an update the foursome:

–Sharon just left for Amsterdam today and a piece of me is officially missing. I saw her yesterday but now we’ll be apart until September. Life just won’t be the same… *depressed*
–Ashley left for Taiwan/Shanghai a few weeks ago and that was the last time I’ve talked to her )= I HOPE YOU’RE WELL WIFEY. I miss you so much.
–Kunku is currently in NYC and she better update us with what she’s doing ASAP because i/everyone needs to know. And I can’t wait to see her as soon as I get back on USA soil! I’m ECSTATIC she will be in the US this summer…this HAS to be a good summer! <3
–And as for me, I’m spending my last few weeks in London eating, shopping, partying, and playing hostess. Two of my best high school friends have come to visit me in London, and so I’ve been babysitter. I just don’t understand how these two graduated, and i DEFINITELY don’t understand how one can go on to be a doctor and the other a Wall Street trader as they try to out-jump each other in the middle of Leicester Square or fight over pillows on my floor. -___- boys are so weird. But congratulations to Ginger and Tian for graduating…and cheers to UVA Med School and Citigroup! I’m so proud (=
For the past couple weeks, I’ve been rediscovering London. From the pier to Regents Park to West End musicals I’ve never seen…I’ve been doing it all and having an amazing time. I hate that I am falling in love with this city all over again, despite knowing it’s a useless romance since I’m leaving in less than a week. I suppose I can’t help setting myself up to get hurt (= It’s masochism, really.
I’ve been happy, but a sort of hesitant happiness. I hate feeling this way, feeling unsure and bittersweet and…insecure? I don’t want to leave, I don’t know what’s ahead, I’m trying to live for the moment, but…I’m afraid?
Anyway, I have to upload pictures soon, but I know kids these days need visual stimulation so I’m going to leave a couple of random bits. These are crappy cell phone pictures from my old phone that I’m currently using, since we all know I lost my Blackberry in Rome. Bummer.

the british library JUST put up a brand new exhibition on Spanish American colonization and empire/revolution. this is a lock of Simon Bolivar’s hair. AMAZING, I KNOW.

Candy Cakes cupcakes…this place is so cute, i couldn’t resist. I don’t know how they taste though, since I snapped this picture really quick on my way somewhere. I’ll have to try it sometime haha.
OH ALSO, I FOUND MY BAG!!!!!!!!!!
Alright, so I lost my purse on the Tube with ALL my cards and ID and tokidoki for hello kitty id case and Nars lipstick (you know, all the things that actually matter) and I thought it was all lost for good. But then yesterday I stopped by the Baker St. London Underground lost and found and…THEY HAD IT!! WITH EVERYTHING!!! Down to the 2 pound 18 cents too! I LOVE THIS HONEST COUNTRY *tears
Haha I was SO ecstatic, i kept gushing to the man behind the counter who was helping me that “this would never happen in NYC” and “I can’t believe you guys found it and NOTHING is missing” and “I had lost hope completely this is AMAZING…”
I should have more faith in mankind (x

old pictures:

before heading out to Florence’s Space Electronica club, which i TOTALLY recommend. Their VIP/table section is also roped off AND elevated, completely enveloped by glass, and overlooks the entire downstairs dance floor (which is pretty sizeable). There is NOTHING like dancing in front of a glass with 928349889342 people in front of you HAHA. Pretty much the closest I’ve gotten to a cage yet! We had SUCH a great time n___n …just beware of overly friendly Italian men haha.

went to ChinaWhite with Grace and Sharon a few months back…amazing venue. Loved the decor, decent music, friendly crowd. Had a good time on a Wednesday (I think it was weds…) Moet champagne and the BIGGEST bottle of belvedere (pictured) I’ve ever seen = kicking off our heels and dancing on the couches. Yes, we danced on the tables/couches at CHINAWHITE. classy. and they allowed us anyway haha (x

Current Video On My Mind:
Okay I’m sorry but I watched this shit like 329374824 times and i CRACK the eff up every time. This lady is hilarious…part of the reason being that I think she’s trying to do an actual serious makeup tutorial haha. But you know this is legit stuff because Michelle Phan commented and even favourited it (and i LOVE Michelle Phan yay!). Yeah, eff fancy vibrating mascaras (eg, Maybelline) just vibrate your own damn head ok.
Current Picture On My Mind:

I saw this on PG’s page HAHA and thank you this is hilarious and so true.
Which leads me to the…
Current Movie On My Mind:
“Better than Chocolate!” I was having a Lesbian movie marathon yesterday and busted out the “Saving Face,” “Better than Chocolate,” and a new amazing discovery–”I Can’t Think Straight!” I just LOVE lesbian movies because (some) most of them tackle gender, sex, and sexuality taboos. I love movies that bend your mind, and unusual couplings/scenarios that would usually never surface into our mainstream media. YAY INDIE FILMS. YAY (some) GLBT FILMS. I think “Saving Face” is still my all-time favorite though–the funny parts are HILARIOUS and the sad parts are SO SAD. You’re crying one minute and laughing hysterically the next–definitely a sign of a great movie (=
And to end this,
I just made fried rice for the first time in my LIFE today. FROM SCRATCH. Yes, I know I am an almost-21-year-old Chinese American but KEYWORD American and thus I don’t cook.
No seriously though, I made the rice and then fried the rice, and put everything into the fried rice MYSELF!! I am so proud (= *waits for applause*
Okay well, you don’t want to know what’s in there, but it’s basically anything and everything I could find in my fridge–but hey, that’s kind of what fried rice/bibimbap style food is, right? You just take whatever shit you can find in the fridge and mix it with rice and sauce and its good (=
So i have (kind of hard/undercooked) rice, canned crab, salt, olive oil, stir fry oil, lao gan ma chili sauce, eggs, chickpeas (from yesterday’s hummus bros takeout), and broken bits of fried dumplings (i tried to fry frozen dumplings but they came out in a wad and got all broken up when i tried to break it apart so i just threw it into the fried rice too…)…..woo.
And guess what?
It is so good.
*proud*
purple print leopard dress from topshop that now belongs to sharone..
SEE I CAN STILL PULL OFF FEMININE!!
(sorry sharone…i only wore it once to try it on before you x___x) But the back on this dress is the coolest part…and sorry for whoring your dress out…but i just think the world should see how hott you are <3

cheers!
