HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
Posted: January 12, 2011 Filed under: Clubbing, Music, Reviews, School, Travel Leave a comment »Alright, so it’s a bit belated. I’m finally back at Mount Holyoke for the rest of January and the next semester. After finals, I spent a couple days in New York, a couple days in Williamsburg with the fam, and a couple days back home in NoVa (Northern Virginia/DC). I’m here now working sporadically at Student Programs, pondering my next steps after graduation, and hanging out…here, and there and possibly Boston and NYC.
in dc i spent lovely time with annie and kimmie at peking gourmet, cafe citron in dc, majestic, and later a&js in annandale. (^im growing my shaved part out, as you can see. i’m like three inches out woo!)
Cafe Citron was cute. When we first got in though (no wait, friendly bouncers), it was kind of crappy. Obnoxious Latin music and a tired crowd. We climbed a rickety staircase to the bathroom. Same ickiness upstairs. Came back down, and then some friends of ours saw some friends of theirs and then all of a sudden we were whisked away to another wing(?) of Cafe Citron. Out the club through another door, underneath a curtain and up a staircase was a whole different club!! (but still Cafe Citron…weird, i know…or maybe i am not remembering this correctly…). This place was poppin’ with fresher beats, a mixed (!!) and moving crowd, and bongo drums! I put exclamation marks with mixed because with DC clubbing, all the places I’ve been to seem to be chock-full of Asians. Not that I really mind that (in fact, sometimes i like it–remember Hiro in NYC?) but a bit of mix once in a while keep things fun. It was 12am and I had already had quite a run at Majestic Bar…so everything is a bit vague for me to remember at Cafe Citron…but I just remember dancing, banging on the bongo drums, running out into the smoking area, and dancing some more. All in all a fun night. i give Cafe Citron a 7/10.
^my jam.
Anyway, it just snowstormed here in Western Massachusetts. The snow is knee deep and it’s STILL SNOWING. blargh. I made my way in my over-the-knee leather boots (that probably arent waterproof and shouldn’t touch water) to my office in Blanchard for Student Programs, set on working my hours (since I missed my last shift…). My FIRST official day at work this year and this snowstorm…there’s not a soul in the office so I’m writing this blog post, reading fashion blogs. listening to music on youtube, and sporadically replying to ECAASU emails. IM SO STRESSED. I’m also down with a little something I think. I havent eaten in three days just because I’m not hungry…I feel a little dizzy and tingly and tired and hot and cold and nauseous. i have no idea what’s wrong though, and I’m not taking any medication…so i hope this will just go away already x___x
Anyway, sorry i’m bad at updating the blog.

Movies You Should NOT Watch
Posted: July 14, 2010 Filed under: Movies, Racism, Reviews 6 Comments »Hm, is that Jackie Chan in “The Karate Kid?” Oh, haha, alright. So Jackie Chan is the new Mr. Miyagi and he’s teaching Karate. Alright. Okay.

WAIT, WHAT?
Excuse me, but am I the only one missing the connection here?!?!?
JACKIE CHAN = CHINESE
MR. MIYAGI = JAPANESE
KARATE = JAPANESE
KUNG FU = CHINESE
Right, so Asian people are so similar that the movie producers failed to note the difference between CHINA AND JAPAN?! I don’t have a problem with the setting of this movie being in China. I’ll stomach the fact that the “bad guys” in the story are little Chinese boys. I’ll even forgive that “the Karate Kid” can be any ethnicity BUT Asian.
BUT REALLY, WOULD IT BE THAT DIFFICULT TO AMEND THE NAME?
How about “The Karate Kid: IN CHINA” or “The Karate Kid/Against the Great Wall”…or even “The KUNGFU Kid…”
I wish they could make a distinction between China and Japan, Kungfu and Karate. Instead, by slapping “Karate” and all its Japanese connotations over a very much Chinese-infused movie, you’re implying that all Asians are interchangeable and the same. The Caribbean and Africa are not the same. South Asia and the Middle East are not the same. Likewise, Japan and China are NOT the same. They are two COMPLETELY different countries with two COMPLETELY different cultures.
Which brings me to my next MOVIE YOU SHOULD NOT WATCH.
Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Before I begin my rant, let’s look at a list of the characters.
- Aang
- Katara
- Sokka
- Toph
- Zuko
- Iroh
- Azula
Note also that these names are Romancized, meaning they also have Chinese counterparts. Note also this quote from wikipedia:
Avatar is set in an Asian-influenced world[2] of Chinese martial arts and elemental manipulation. The show drew on elements from traditional Asian culture, while blending the styles of anime and US domestic cartoons.[3]
Oh, I see. So all the names are Chinese/Tibetan/Japanese and the setting is Asian culture influenced and all the fighting are martial arts, and oh, even the drawing style is anime…
Then explain this cast:

OH LOVELY. SO THE ANTAGONIST IS THE ONLY PERSON OF COLOR. Just lovely.
And if you take a look at the REST of the cast:
(courtesy of IMDb)
…you’ll see that there is not a single East Asian person in here (aside from the “Old Man in Temple.” Even Princess YUE is a white girl. Uh, last time I checked, THATS A CHINESE WORD. I appreciate the fact that there are so many South Asians, but this is EAST ASIA you’re borrowing from. WHERE IS OUR EXPOSURE? WHERE ARE OUR ACTORS?!?! And there is DEFINITELY no shortage of East Asian actors, so there are no excuses.
I want to see more Asians in the media.
You can’t exploit us, our history, and our culture and exclude us.
That’s stealing. I won’t tolerate that.
And you shouldn’t either.
ps. i love how we have a blog-tagging category for “racism”…haha did you make this sharon? how perfect….and useful. *checks box*
So this is what it’s like to be 21.

I’ll never have to explain to the bouncer that the picture “doesn’t look like me because that was BEFORE the surgery…” I’ll never have to apologetically switch my cocktail order to a “virgin” when the waiter decides to ask for identification. I’ll never have to freak out and hide when the police bursts into a party. And I’ll never have to lie to anyone about my age anymore…because I’ve passed the last threshold.

i havent tried facetime yet but i am in love with the flash (&zoom!). it’s so incredibly useful!
all pictures in this post were taken by the iphone. not bad at all n___n

Viktor & Rolf: Flowerbomb Summer (La Vie En Rose)
Posted: June 12, 2010 Filed under: Make-up, Reviews, Uncategorized 1 Comment »Viktor & Rolf have introduced Flowerbomb Summer Fragrance La Vie En Rose (shown at right), a new lighter, warm-weather version of their popular Flowerbomb perfume, featuring notes of mandarin and bergamot.
—–(via elle.nl)
Flowerbomb ‘La Vie en Rose’ is a colorful, fruity floral that opens with an explosion of citrus intertwined with sparkling pink pepper. The heart blends green and floral notes before evolving towards a gentle drydown.
—–(via http://www.osmoz.com/)

(I’m finally getting around to doing a review…)
So I bought this at the London Debenhams for around 45 quid, but it apparently retails around $80-$100 in US markets. Anyway, it was time for a new fragrance. If you know me, you know I have always been a very faithful subject of Escada- Pacific Paradise. I’ve used the perfume and the lotion religiously throughout the end of high school (when I first discovered it) until now, and it has served me well. However, if you know me, you also know that one of my biggest complaints (year round) is that I’m running out. And that Pacific Paradise is no longer in production (being limited edition). The new Escada fragrances are similar, but not me (I like them distinctively fruity & floral with sweet topnotes that mellow out into a sour, citrus-y twist).
So I’ve been out on a search for the past half year for the perfect fragrance. I am extremely picky about perfume, and wouldn’t settle for anything but the one (can you imagine my love life? haha, kidding), thus, it takes me a while to sample everything and decide. In the end, I narrowed it down to Bvlgari- Omnia Amethyst and Viktor & Rolf- Flowerbomb. My only problem with the Flowerbomb, however, was that it was too thick at times (esp for summer). I ADORE the smell but it reminds me of the Coco Chanel I have. Classic, but too mature for me. The Bvlgari was fine, but that was it…fine…and not extraordinary. Plus the bottle is SO cheap and ugly.
Then, by some amazing twist of fate, Lydia and I stroll into the fragrance section of Debenhams and ‘LO AND BEHOLD, Flowerbomb, summer edition in its adorable little pink grenade bottle. There was no sample but I didn’t care–I bought it without smelling it or a second thought. Just the idea of a lighter, fresher Flowerbomb was enough.
Anyway, I came back and tried it and it was PERFECT. No strong initial smell of alcohol like my Escada, but my only gripe is that it doesn’t stay well. I spray once (the spray comes out very full) and it’s enough for the moment; however, 4 or 5 hours later it’s so faint that you’d have to press your nose to my neck to get even a whiff. Oh, and one other major problem—
ITS LIMITED EDITION.
Grrr, I always pick the shortlived ones! I’d stock up but upon inquiry at the Viktor & Rolf counter at Bloomingdales I was answered with a quizzical stare.
“Summer fragrance?”
I had just come back from Philadelphia so I still had my toiletries in my bag. I pulled out the little pink grenade and presented it to the woman behind the counter. Her eyes widened as she carefully took the bottle and scrutinized it. She asked, voice hushed, “May I try it?”
I nodded, amused by her reaction.
“We don’t offer this in the United States.”
Bummer. Quy (who was with me) explained I had gotten it in London. The lady gave me an “oh that’s why” face and handed the bottle back to me.
“The US gets everything a few years later.”
EDIIIIIIIIIT: THANK YOU COMMENTER APPARENTLY ITS AVAILABLE AT SEPHORA *joy YAYAYAYYYY lets stock up!
got mah nails diiiiiddddd

SO EVERYONE IS A LAZY BUTTHOLE EXCEPT ME.
AND, DESPITE ME BEING BUSY AND LEAVING LONDON IN SIX DAYS, I am going to post a blog. Yes, I know I’m fabulous. Here we go.
First, an update the foursome:

–Sharon just left for Amsterdam today and a piece of me is officially missing. I saw her yesterday but now we’ll be apart until September. Life just won’t be the same… *depressed*
–Ashley left for Taiwan/Shanghai a few weeks ago and that was the last time I’ve talked to her )= I HOPE YOU’RE WELL WIFEY. I miss you so much.
–Kunku is currently in NYC and she better update us with what she’s doing ASAP because i/everyone needs to know. And I can’t wait to see her as soon as I get back on USA soil! I’m ECSTATIC she will be in the US this summer…this HAS to be a good summer! <3
–And as for me, I’m spending my last few weeks in London eating, shopping, partying, and playing hostess. Two of my best high school friends have come to visit me in London, and so I’ve been babysitter. I just don’t understand how these two graduated, and i DEFINITELY don’t understand how one can go on to be a doctor and the other a Wall Street trader as they try to out-jump each other in the middle of Leicester Square or fight over pillows on my floor. -___- boys are so weird. But congratulations to Ginger and Tian for graduating…and cheers to UVA Med School and Citigroup! I’m so proud (=
For the past couple weeks, I’ve been rediscovering London. From the pier to Regents Park to West End musicals I’ve never seen…I’ve been doing it all and having an amazing time. I hate that I am falling in love with this city all over again, despite knowing it’s a useless romance since I’m leaving in less than a week. I suppose I can’t help setting myself up to get hurt (= It’s masochism, really.
I’ve been happy, but a sort of hesitant happiness. I hate feeling this way, feeling unsure and bittersweet and…insecure? I don’t want to leave, I don’t know what’s ahead, I’m trying to live for the moment, but…I’m afraid?
Anyway, I have to upload pictures soon, but I know kids these days need visual stimulation so I’m going to leave a couple of random bits. These are crappy cell phone pictures from my old phone that I’m currently using, since we all know I lost my Blackberry in Rome. Bummer.

the british library JUST put up a brand new exhibition on Spanish American colonization and empire/revolution. this is a lock of Simon Bolivar’s hair. AMAZING, I KNOW.

Candy Cakes cupcakes…this place is so cute, i couldn’t resist. I don’t know how they taste though, since I snapped this picture really quick on my way somewhere. I’ll have to try it sometime haha.
OH ALSO, I FOUND MY BAG!!!!!!!!!!
Alright, so I lost my purse on the Tube with ALL my cards and ID and tokidoki for hello kitty id case and Nars lipstick (you know, all the things that actually matter) and I thought it was all lost for good. But then yesterday I stopped by the Baker St. London Underground lost and found and…THEY HAD IT!! WITH EVERYTHING!!! Down to the 2 pound 18 cents too! I LOVE THIS HONEST COUNTRY *tears
Haha I was SO ecstatic, i kept gushing to the man behind the counter who was helping me that “this would never happen in NYC” and “I can’t believe you guys found it and NOTHING is missing” and “I had lost hope completely this is AMAZING…”
I should have more faith in mankind (x

old pictures:

before heading out to Florence’s Space Electronica club, which i TOTALLY recommend. Their VIP/table section is also roped off AND elevated, completely enveloped by glass, and overlooks the entire downstairs dance floor (which is pretty sizeable). There is NOTHING like dancing in front of a glass with 928349889342 people in front of you HAHA. Pretty much the closest I’ve gotten to a cage yet! We had SUCH a great time n___n …just beware of overly friendly Italian men haha.

went to ChinaWhite with Grace and Sharon a few months back…amazing venue. Loved the decor, decent music, friendly crowd. Had a good time on a Wednesday (I think it was weds…) Moet champagne and the BIGGEST bottle of belvedere (pictured) I’ve ever seen = kicking off our heels and dancing on the couches. Yes, we danced on the tables/couches at CHINAWHITE. classy. and they allowed us anyway haha (x

Clubbing
Posted: May 5, 2010 Filed under: Clubbing, Music, Reviews 1 Comment »Everyone loves the Secret Discotheque. No one minds the thirty minute queue for Brighton’s “best night out” at Coalition (according to my floormate). At least it’s a pound entry. If you make it to the guest list by four pm. Or was it five… Plus, you can leave your bags in the cloakroom for free. And it gets even better once you step in to the dance floor. 70s and 80s all the way, starring Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson, S Club 7, Madonna, Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, and the sweaty college kids showcasing their dance routine, from random pelvic thrusts to half-attempted swing dancing. For those of you who are nostalgic and would love a sweaty group karaoke that goes on for hours, this is the place for you. For those of you whose friends still live in the 80s, I recommend that you get your drink on before you get there. Our beloved friends Jose, Jack and Johnnie will do more good than harm (well at least it will help you fastforward the long queues but help you remember the excitement on the dance floor). Am I speaking from experience? The first two times I went, I had fun. Lots of fun. The third time I went, not so much. My buzz was gone while waiting in the queue to get in, and once we got in, I saw a high school prom gone wild. Scratch that. A middle school dance gone wild. Don’t get me wrong. I love the music. But two, three hours of seventies, eighties and nineties pop is just too overwhelming for me, especially when I’m sober.

So that was 70s and 80s and a bit of 90s. Now to the new millenium. The new millenium that brought about dubstep that revolutionized the garage scene in the UK by mixing in the strong bass line with the dub remixes of 2-step garage tracks. The use of syncopation, the unexpected changes in the rhythm. That’s what wikipedia says about dubstep. What I saw was a sea of self-absorbed men moving and stepping to the same beat creating a rippling effect, except a bit more systematic, maybe even robotic, yet a bit more chaotic, and definitely on the crazier side. I fell in love instantly. The idea of losing yourself to the beat, to the steps, the movement, the bodies jerking back and forth, arms stretched out in mid air, pumping air into the darkness of the beat. Sound waves colliding, sweat drops smearing, and nervous heads bouncing. The tension and the relaxation. The contradiction and the reverse. Audio is the place to be for dubstep and drum and bass, but the only problem is these two genres only attract a select group of people and not everyone is fond of them.

Brighton’s more mainstream clubbing scene other than the Secret Discoteque revolve around the clubs on the seafront. They are literally couple yards away from the start of the pebbly beach–perfect place for a barbecue during the day, bon fire by night, pre-gaming before clubbing, and eating fish and chips or a kebab afterward (or for some people who have bladder problems, it may serve a different purpose when they queue). Digital is known more for its electronic dance mixes, Honeyclub for mainstream hip hop and American pop, and Life just a combination of everything. My favorite used to be Digital until last week when I was disappointed by the crowd that closely resembled the crowd at Coalition on Thursday nights. Music is mostly good though. Well not that Tuesday night. But most nights. Hopefully.

When I go to London though, it’s a whole different story. One, I have Aileen. Two, there are two types of clubs: bigger, more mainstream clubs with several rooms that do not discriminate against looks, age, wealth or taste in music and clubs that are more like lounges that lure the younger girls in with “ladies free before 11,” piquing the interest of older men seeking to escape from their dull married life or who just don’t have game elsewhere. Actually, I lied. There are many kinds of clubs that don’t fit in the two categories described above. Like Amika where there were decent young-ish men and women enjoying each others’ company (although there were older men in desperate search for younger girls to prey on) or like Sound where we were attacked by 10+ horny men or all the clubs that host the Kpop events across London. Clubbing in London can be fun. The allure is in the diversity of the crowd, the music, the venues. But despite the diversity, sometimes it just seems like it’s the same thing over and over again.
Current Obsession: Bodysuits
Posted: April 29, 2010 Filed under: Fashion, Restaurants, Reviews, Travel, Uncategorized 3 Comments »Call them what you wanna–bodysuits, leotards, onepieces… whatever–I love ‘em. Two days ago I went out to Topshop and scooped up this amazing find:
except in lilac. imagine this worn over a black bandeau (or any color really, though preferably solid) and underneath a pair of denims (high waisted would look good too) with boots–hello spring! I also picked up a traditional red military suit style Jovonnista cardigan (with the black shoulderpads and metal tassels and everything!)
a salute to topshop sale! this was originally 60 something pounds and i got it for 25! hurrah!
annnnd i got a Lipsy “Lace Panelled Jersey Dress”

classic and understated! sexy little black dress with an alluring sweetheart cut modestly overlayed with black lace…JUST what i needed for that classy evening staple ;D and i got a shitload of other cute things for myself and friends that i might post later.
Meanwhile, I’m looking up American Apparel bodysuits and drooling. I’m also thinking about creating a lookbook (lookbook.nu) but I’m hesitating because of my nooby photography skills (also I’m lazy, boo). Maybe later…we’ll see.
Right now I’m watching 2012 and eating Toblerone…I also just finished half a carton of Haagen-Dazs Cookies & Cream Ice Cream. dammit I keep telling myself to stop because its SPRING and nearing minimal clothing season…but my mouth wont obey and it just keeps eating )= Anyway I leave you all with a few pictures.
beachin’ it up in Greece woo! I found the ADORABLE hat for around 13 Euros at this cute little Greek brand shop called “achilleas accessories.” This is also my first time wearing this new retro-ish BRIGHT RED swimsuit I got at Victoria’s Secret before coming to the UK (inspired by rachel mcadam’s suit in “the notebook”). Didn’t think I’d get the chance to wear it…well, at least not in the uk hahaaha.
afternoon tea with sharone and grace a while ago at Concerto in London
–i HIGHLY recommend this place. i got a sandwich and it was AMAZING. this set was for two (sharon and grace ordered afternoon tea set) and it filled them up just right. three different types of sandwiches, two different types of scones (with a little jar of jelly each!), and two yummy strawberry tarts on top. I think the total for this entire set was around 12-14 pounds (tea included). everyone got their own separate pots of hot water for our tea as well. my sandwich was around 8 pounds (i THINK, tea not included). All in all it was very reasonably priced, very cute (although the shop itself was a bit cramped as it was so busy), and very very good!
until next time babies!
