Just Stay With Me: Sai’s Debut in Kud Kheo Su!!
Posted: October 28, 2011 Filed under: Music, Uncategorized | Tags: emotional, jear, kud kheo su, laos, laos hiphop, sai, southeast asia, xay 1 Comment »One of my really good friends from high school recently began her career in the music industry. She’s the featured artist in Jear Pacific’s latest single, Kud Kheo Su. The video was shot over the summer in Vientiane, Laos and there are some great shots when the camera is focused on the two of them. She’s always had a great voice and was the guitarist for our Affirmation performance during our senior year at Madeira, I’m really excited for her
.
If you’ve followed the trend in the music I post, you probably know that I’m a sucker for emotional songs, (for someone who is pretty warm most of the time, music really does bring out my sensitive and emotional side, so please bear with me
)this has a good blend of hip hop and a ballad-y feel with an Asian flavour. Its very similar to Thai music but still special in its own way.
The song is about moving on from heartbreak. Its coming from a third person perspective. Jear raps about how you shouldn’t be sad and crying your eyes out for the guy who broke your heart, though it may seem like the end of the world, its really not.
The literal translation of Sai’s part:
What’s left is the heart that’s been crushed that it’s weak.
And the never ending tears that will help sooth the pain to open up new ways.
To get up again and fight, Open your heart to new people, new love.
And you won’t have to bear again … the sorrow that we have today…
if he/she wants to leave you, then just let him/her go already.
I’d like for you to move on. Just stay with me and be strong.
The emotions in both their voices make me feel the pain and sadness emoted despite not being able to understand Laos. Maybe its the familiarity of her voice which is comforting because we’ve been through a lot together, but I’m pretty sure its her talent and the quality of the song in general that makes its so amazing!! I honestly cannot STOP listening to this song. Check it out!! I’m hooked.
I hope its infectious to you as I found it
.
The official MV:
AND heres an audio if you want to skip the dramatic video and just listen to the song on a playlist:
(I titled the post Stay With me because thats my favourite part of the song when shes singing in Laos and says “stay with me”, its the only part I understood so I captioned it that way)
A Royal Himalayan Wedding
Posted: October 20, 2011 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: Bhutan, Bhutan Royal, Druk Gyaltsuen, himalayas, jetsun pema, Royal Wedding 5 Comments »Last week was a historic moment in the history of Bhutan. The 5th Dragon King of the Wangchuck Dynasty wed Her Majesty Ashi Jetsun Pema in a traditional Buddhist ceremony in Punakha, the ancient capital of Bhutan. It was a beautiful and colorful ceremony held in the 17th century fortress!! The celebrations just concluded yesterday (the 19th). There were some moments of solemnity during the religious sessions but lots of smiling and laughter in rejoice of the glorious event.
Unfortunately I was not there to witness all the festivities but I had to follow closely so I didn’t feel too left out/left behind thanks to the global press coverage and the distribution of images through the Royal Office for Media. Due to the various appearances made by the Royal Couple, I put up photos of each of her outfits for the different events:

The Queen wore chunky heels for the wedding ceremony!! I found a close up of the shoes and you can see elements of Bhutanese Buddhist art, definitely a fine compliment to the decor of the crown as well as the traditional buddhist artwork covering the fortress.

As for His Majesty, he wore a Brocade Gho (traditional attire of Bhutanese men) passed down from his great-grandfather… the 2nd King of Bhutan. The golden brocade gho with floral patterns that His Majesty wore for the Royal Wedding, the Third and Fourth Kings also wore the same gho at their weddings. The special boots are called Tsho Lham. Only worn by Bhutanese men, usually high officials and Royalty, during special occasions. The yellow scarf draped around the body is only worn by the King. The yellow is the color of the King, just like in Thailand.

On their way back to the Capital (Thimphu) meeting their well wishers:

I love the tiara, the celebration in Thimphu:

The last day in Paro:

Now that the Royal Wedding is over, rumours of the Royal Honeymoon are floating around. The Times of India is speculating that the Royal Couple will be heading to Rajasthan:

How romantic! I’ve always been fascinated by the beauty and allure of Rajasthan. Not to mention their amazing textiles and jewellery. Which I hope/plan to blog about soon

My faves are Cam and Mitchell but Phil is pretty hilarious too. I stumbled upon a slideshow of “The Best of #Phil Dunphy” and picked two of my faves, the others may have been a little inappropriate just b/c he can be lol. This seriously made my day.

My mother uses LOL and OMG now, its adorable and useful but I hope she never gets to ask me what WTF means … or worse, actually use it on fb!

Fall Must Haves!
Posted: October 7, 2011 Filed under: Uncategorized Leave a comment »In the spirit of fashion and my FAVOURITE SEASON, here are a few items I picked up while on my trip to Asia:
1) CHUNKY HEELS!!!
Jeffrey Campbell’s been doing them for awhile, Marc Jacobs got a cute collection of chunky for pre-fall and fall collection, they’re making appearances here and there. I fell in love with them when I was shopping in Bangkok, I bumped into 3 trendy ladies at random locations wearing the similar chunky heeled mary janes and so I went on a quest to find them. It’s in the mail now. This is what it looks like! (but I got them in red b/c thats what hotter this season but the greens kinda cute too):

Keira Knightley’s got an interesting version on, its still cute none-the-less… what can I say? I’m obsessed!!

2) ANIMAL PRINTS/GOING TRIBAL
Ok, so the animal print trend has been going on for awhile but it hasn’t necessarily caught on but now that its all over EVERY store. Its become an essential, I’ve always had a fondness for leopard prints and accumulated quite a collection already. I’ve started to incorporate zebra prints too with a purchase of a supercute jumpsuit from k-mart and some cropped tees. So when I think animal prints, i dont think tribal (which is most fashion drivers kinda put out that.. or with the combo of leather and prints -_-…. so tried out for me…), I think Cruella De-vil!!! A personal fashion icon of mine and one of the many fashionable villains in the history of our childhood. Shes like the Coco Chanel of Disney villains. I find it an interesting social commentary (consumerism, materialism hand in hand with the damning of women as “Evil”, but WHATEVER stylish and brilliant- scheming/plotting uses alotta brain activity- is all I see)….

(really hard to exclude the Kardashians when talking about style & fashion)

…. which brings me to the next must have….
3) FAUX-FUR COATS!!
I know, killing of innocent animals is cruel and for that I shun Cruella De-vil but a lover of fashion and style cannot deny that it is such an essential! Luxurious and sooo appropriate for the fall. We are in the North-east with horrid snowy winters not so appropriate in fear of getting the fur (faux) wet!!

A Michael Kors fur coat fall 2011

4) BOXY BAGS
They trickled their way in during the spring now they’re making a statement.. on the streets and on the runway ^^

for a bit more casual look to complete a grunge style or simple/innocent style… take a pick from any below:

I personally like the leopard print one. I have a really cute one that I take with me everywhere! I’m over the quilted bags now, I even moved onto the ostrich print bags which are making a big splash in Asia already and I see some stuff around here too.
5)PETER PAN COLLARS <3
Nobody really grows up and these collars are pretty adorbs. You’ve seen them on babydoll dresses and on usually more feminine attire, but now regardless of the look you sport… its totally a catch you have to make
.

Alexa Chung sporting it… and different styles as you like it:

I have one more trend but I think its best to cap it at 5
.
Its fall break and I’m heading to DC to spend some time with Aileenie and meet up with some high school friends. Hope its a blast!! I miss G-town and the other wonderfulness of DC. We are going to the Spy Museum Saturday (yayyyy) and then clubbing perhaps and Peking Duck for peking duck ^^. And definitely some U street, G-town and Adam’s Morgans explorations.
(Keep an eye out for my next blogpost, thoughts on the OCCUPY movement. I want to articulate myself well so its taking some time.)
HAPPY FALL NETIZENS <3
xx

Posted: August 1, 2011 Filed under: Uncategorized Leave a comment »So its been 2 months since I’ve been back to the motherland and its almost time to head back!
While complaining about having to go back to another semester of books and writing, one of the best advice I got from my friend when I first got back was to get married. We laughed b/c shes happily engaged and the thought did cross my mind, “wouldn’t it be easier to just get married, quit school, have adorable (hopefully) children and pursue what i love w/o an overrated college degree?” But the reality is I’m nowhere near able to engage in such a huge commitment as I have so much more growing to do. I guess only some of us can be so lucky
. But anyhoooo, I’m Buddhist by the way, my mother’s adopted son (a monk) had stopped by so I dug up some of my astrological readings done at birth and asked him to translate it. The tradition in Bhutan is to get a “Ke Tshe” done when a baby is born to foresee any turmoils and to advise religious rituals (to the parents) to prevent possible danger to their kid’s life. So it turns out that if I were to become religious later in life OR become a nun, I’ll lead a very prosperous and successful life when I’m reborn. I used to make jokes about becoming a nun b/c there was a nunnery right above my best friend’s house but I never knew it was a potential path written down in my birth. Now here comes the funny part, my dad’s friend had done numerology readings for my sisters and I.. and in that reading it predicted my marriage age to be 19, 21-22… I’m going to be celebrating my 2nd annual 21st in November and I’m very single so the odds are pretty obvious lol.
Of course, while I do have faith in my religion I don’t blindly follow my faith… I just thought it was hilarious and kinda eerie because of the accurateness of my personality and the trials and tribulations I’ve faced. Maybe I’ll post the numerology reading on the blog since thats in English, the other one is sanskrit so that’ll be a tough one to deal with. That might be lil egocentric but it’ll be interesting to share with people who are into that kinda stuff
On a random note, as usual, here are my adorbs nephews who are making it unbearable to leave day by day. Both are spitting images of their madres. They insisted on clipping their lil sister’s bows on their heads ^^ :

(written in may but i never posted…sorry!)
great, 16 years of nonstop school and here i am. it’s so crazy, but i’m happy. i think i’m ready for this…ready to be on my own and ready to NOT WRITE PAPERS.
no, but seriously, this past month has been crazy. graduation on may 22…and before that there was the laurel parade, our school tradition. i looked everywhere for a really unique white dress (we were all supposed to wear white) because EVERYONE will be wearing one of those knee-length white sleeveless dresses and…i never found one good enough.
then, one day i was walking through union square and on a complete whim found this AMAZING white trina turk jumpsuit. fate! so good to me ;D i was DEFINITELY the ONLY one in a jumpsuit hahaha. everyone went crazy over the outfit, and strangers even came up to me to ask where i had gotten it from!

good buy =D now my parents have left for asia (including bali and hong kong) and my mom stole the jumpsuit T__T (“i want to wear this on the beach in bali!!”) but whatever….im home alone now! (with my brother)
anyway, back to graduation. the actual ceremony was horrendously boring, as graduations usually are. i was 30 minutes late to the ceremony and ran into my spot just as soon as everyone was lining into the amphitheater. oops.
after graduation and goodbyes i went to nyc for a couple days. then home, and then i went back to nyc for my bday weekend! more on that in a few days…i’m such a slacker with updating these days. instead, i leave you with a song and a review!
REVIEW/RECAP:
Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty at The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Okay, so it’s not really a review…more like a recap on my visit. I went first on a Monday or something in the afternoon. The line was over 45 minutes long and wrapped around the entire level of the museum! I didn’t have the patience, so opted instead to visit the musical instrument exhibit and other painting galleries. The next day I arrived a bit earlier, around 2pm, and the line was still long, but definitely not as long as it was the day before when we got there at 3/4pm. We only waited for about 25 minutes, and it was well worth the wait! I spent maybe an hour inside as there was just SO MUCH STUFF! Mcqueen dresses, yes, but also lots of shoes, hats, accessories, and media exhibitions too! I loooved the Kate Moss hologram at the end–i watched it maybe 5 times until Silvena pulled us away! It’s SO worth the visit and wait; I loved the whole thing (except for the weird Africa/Asian exhibitions that were a bit racist/orientalist in their depictions…).
I bought a tiny McQueen armadillo shoe from the gift shop at the end. Overpriced, but so cute. Everyone should go visit, especially since the exhibit is only running until July 31st. No photos, but i sneaked a couple.
